Price Claim Monitor

An independent check of your discount prices.

Every night we check, from the outside, how prices, crossed-out prices and discount labels appear on your web shop. Built for the e-commerce, pricing and legal teams of EU online retailers.

01 Why now

Every announced price reduction needs its reference price.

Since 28 May 2022, Article 6a of the Price Indication Directive (98/6/EC), introduced by the Omnibus Directive (EU) 2019/2161, has required every announced price reduction in the EU to state the prior price: the lowest price the shop applied in at least the 30 days before the reduction.

Consumer authorities check this from the outside, and some rebuild a shop’s price history to do it. An independent, dated record of what your own shop showed lets you answer questions about a past discount with evidence.

02 How it works

What we check every night.

We visit your public web shop, the same pages your customers see, and record what each product page shows.

  • The price

The price a customer sees on the public product page, exactly as shown.

  • The crossed-out or “was” price

Any earlier price shown next to it, struck through or labelled “was”, “before” or similar.

  • The label that explains it

What the comparison refers to: your own earlier price, a recommended retail price (RRP), or no label at all.

  • 30-day lowest-price labels

Whether a “lowest price in the last 30 days” statement is shown, and the price it gives.

  • Stock on discounted items

Whether a product shown at a reduced price can actually be bought.

  • The same promotion across countries

Whether one campaign shows the same reference and label in each of your country shops.

Invented example: a jacket shown at €59.95 with a crossed-out €99.95 and no label. In the report this reads as a discount shown without a reference price.

03 Evidence

A record that shows if it has been changed.

Every observation keeps three things, and each captured page is kept for 365 days.

  1. Page URLThe exact product page the price was read from.
  2. Capture time (UTC)When the page was read, in Coordinated Universal Time, so nights in different countries line up.
  3. SHA-256 fingerprintA code calculated from the page exactly as it was received.

Captured pages are stored unchanged, in write-once storage, for 365 days. If one character of a stored page changed, its SHA-256 fingerprint would no longer match the one recorded that night. That makes the record tamper-evident: anyone can recalculate the fingerprint and confirm the page is the one captured.

No page content is republished. The saved pages are evidence for you, not material we share.

05 How we work

Polite, discreet, and from the outside.

  • Public product pages only

The same pages your customers see. No logins, accounts or checkout.

  • Your robots.txt and crawl delays

We read them before every visit and follow them.

  • Nothing bypassed

We never bypass bot protection, logins or rate limits. A page we cannot read politely stays out of the check.

  • One visit per shop per night

A single, paced visit each night, not continuous traffic.

  • Data kept in the EU

Stored in Microsoft Azure, West Europe region.

  • Findings stay private

Results are shared only with you. We do not publish findings or name shops.
